Solar Panel Recycling

Solar Panel Recycling

GreenCitizen, Inc. is aware of the increasing amount of used solar panels that are reaching their end of useful life. Previously it was more difficult to handle recycling solar panels.

With the recently passed amendments under the California Code of Regulations (CCR) Title 22, GreenCitizen will now be able to help the public to recycle their solar panels such that they don’t cause negative environmental effects.

If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, we accept solar panels with non-broken monocrystalline and polycrystalline cells at a cost of $1.5/lb for drop-off recycling service at our Burlingame location.

If you’re from outside of San Francisco, you can try our Green Directory to find a solar panel recycler near you.

Solar panels shouldn’t go to the landfill because it would be a great loss of valuable materials.

Through current recycling processes, it is possible to recover some silicon, glass, aluminum, silver and copper from pv modules using crystalline cell technology. However, there are a few other solar pv module technologies that may contain lead, cadmium, and other toxic metals and polymers that would be best to be collected by a specialty hazardous waste recycler. Some of the thin-film pv technologies use these materials within them so read the manufacturer’s safety data sheets (SDS) carefully.
