In an assertive push towards a green Europe, Amazon announced the launch of 39 new renewable energy ventures this year. These projects, focused primarily in Europe, have boosted the region's clean energy capacity by over one gigawatt. With this addition, Amazon has championed more than 160 wind and solar projects spread across 13 European nations.
Once fully operational, the combined energy from these projects will deliver a staggering 5.8 gigawatts of clean energy capacity, sufficient to electrify over 4.7 million European homes every year. Among these ventures are 15 rooftop solar installations nestled on Amazon facilities. Further, Amazon has initiated 24 large-scale wind and solar projects. A notable highlight is Amazon's inaugural solar farm in Greece, which follows their first similar endeavor in Poland in the preceding year.
Amazon’s strides in Greece and Poland are particularly impactful. Their investments are accelerating the transition of these countries from fossil fuels, aiding in the rapid decarbonization of their energy grids.
Lindsay McQuade, the esteemed Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, remarked, “With more than 160 wind and solar projects in Europe, Amazon is helping to provide new sources of clean energy to local grids, creating jobs, and supporting local businesses as we progress toward powering our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025.” McQuade emphasized the significant role of corporate investment in ushering in a future driven by clean energy.
From 2014 through 2022, Amazon's European renewable endeavors have spurred an estimated economic investment of €2.4 billion. This contribution has infused more than €723 million into Europe's GDP. The projects unveiled this year alone have sustained over 3,900 full-time jobs.
Amazon revealed these impactful figures derived from their newly developed economic model, which is in line with the guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This model received validation from the globally recognized independent advisory firm, Oxford Economics.
It's noteworthy that Amazon’s aggressive stance on renewables has crowned them as Europe’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy since 2021. Their recent projects span across several European countries including Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Germany, Greece, Sweden, and the UK.
Amazon’s ambitious goal targets powering all their operations, spanning Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers, fulfillment hubs, and brick-and-mortar stores, entirely by renewable energy by 2025. This target is a commendable leap, aiming to achieve this milestone five years ahead of their initial 2030 goal. As of 2022, 90% of Amazon’s global electricity consumption is sourced from renewable energies.
